Work-Life Rhythm is Offbeat?

People often use the term work/life balance. We like to replace the word “balance” with “rhythm.” Life isn’t a balancing act. Providing equal time and attention to different aspects of your life just isn’t how we operate.

We can’t run steady like a computer. It’s about getting into a rhythm that feels steady and like second nature.

Finding your work/life rhythm can help you ease stress and ensure you have time for all aspects of your life that matter most. This is our list of five red flags that may indicate your work/life rhythm is a little (or a lot) offbeat. 


#1 You constantly feel like you’re behind on everything. 

This could look like consistently missing deadlines, apologizing to people for being late, and not feeling like you’re living in the moment. You’re either missing out on something at home or getting further and further behind at work. You’re torn between the two. 


#2 You can’t move forward. 

As you feel like you’re falling further behind, you also can’t move forward. You may be at home thinking “I’d really like to paint that wall,” but simply can’t start any new projects you’ve been putting off. You’re caught in a cycle of barely dragging tasks across the finish line and never feeling like you’re thriving. 

#3 You feel burnt out. 

Everyone has days where they feel sluggish, but burnout is more and should be taken seriously.* You frequently feel sick or are sick for longer. Your brain doesn’t feel sharp - like you’re constantly forgetting things or it’s harder to think on your feet. 


#4 There’s no space for YOU on your calendar. 

Some activities build energy and some expend energy. It’s like a rollercoaster - you need to climb up before you can come down. If you don’t allow space to gain energy before using it, burnout could creep up on you. Start by taking stock of what activities feel like a chore and what activities feel like a treat. Ensure both sides have space on your calendar.   

#5 You’re constantly rearranging your calendar to make room for others.

Sometimes, it’s hard to say no. But remember, you’re the first person your calendar needs to accommodate. Maybe you need to turn down an event invitation or push a meeting to another week. If you start with you, you’ll be able to feel more present for tasks and activities that involve others.

The clearest yet unclear sign your work/life rhythm is offbeat is just that something feels off. It’s different for everyone, but you generally don’t feel like you’re operating at your best.
